“When morning gilds the skies
My heart awaking cries;
May Jesus Christ be praised!

When you begin the day
O never fail to say,
May Jesus Christ be praised.

When e’er the sweet church bell
peels over hill and dell,
May Jesus Christ be praised

Let all the earth around
Ring joyous with the sound
May Jesus Christ be praised!”

– Stanzas from “When Morning Gilds the Skies” from Katholisches Gesangbuch – 1744, translated by Robert S. Bridges – 1868.

  1. I live on a lake and we have some gorgeous sunrises some mornings! Sometimes, all I can do is just sit and stare and praise God, as it takes my breath away! Thanks for sharing such a perfect poem to express that experience!
