Mural Monday – Threshing

Today’s mural in the Sooke Agriculture Historium collection is:

THRESHING

Sooke Agriculture Historium mural

Threshing oats on the farm of Ralph Strong on Church Road in 1940.

I grew up on threshing stories–stories of how the women had to have the cupboards and iceboxes stocked with food for the crews that would descend on the farm when it was their turn for the machine, of racing to get the crop in before the weather turned, and  of interesting characters who were part of the threshing crews. Today’s harvesting is  much less labor intensive–but, it seems, not nearly as colorful or rich in stories and memories.
